Back to Writing my own Articles for you

I’m delighted to be back writing my own integrative medicine newsletter article for all of my patients and readers.

So many advances are occurring in the field of integrative medicine. Increasingly, conventional medicine and integrative medicine are coming closer and closer together. Just witness the new conversations about probiotics that we integrative practitioners have been talking about for decades. Now it is part of mainstream medicine.

The role of environmental medicine in everything from autoimmune disease to cancer is being discussed on a large forum internationally.

The role of stimulating the immune system for people with cancer is another example of this coming together of integrative medicine and traditional medicine. Traditional oncologists are now looking at vaccines to boost the immune system of the patient against their malignancy. [Read more…]

Dr Soram Chosen One of the Best Doctors in LA!

I am very honored to tell my patients and my readers that I have been chosen one of the best doctors in Los Angeles. The world-famous Hollywood Reporter magazine did a very scientifically run poll to pick the best doctors of Los Angeles.

They partnered with the physician led research team of Castle Connolly, which is the United States’ preeminent medical database authority. “They then surveyed 800 professionals in the film, television, movie and media fields to find out who among these doctors are the most beloved, trusted and go to physicians in Los Angeles.”

I was called by phone out of a busy day with patients, by the producer of the article to tell me that I had received amongst the highest votes of all those that they polled. They told me that they wanted to feature me with a picture with one of my famous patients. I was so honored that Morgan agreed to be photographed with me for this great award.

Here is the short bio of me, that was written about me from the interview:

“Because his new patients don’t always understand what integrative medicine is, Dr. Soram Khalsa encourages them to view a video.

In it, the 66-year-old turbaned and bewhiskered internist — he adopted Sikhism, a religion founded in 15th century Punjab, in 1971 after a bout with chronic fatigue syndrome led him to yoga for relief — explains how he combines traditional medical practices with acupuncture, homeopathy, herbs and vitamin therapies, particularly vitamin D. (Author of The Vitamin D Revolution, Khalsa says 90 percent of his new patients are D-deficient.)

Between optimum health and cancer, he says, there exists a “gray zone” in which organs might not be clinically diseased but still can cause symptoms Western medicine can’t detect or treat. “A lot of people’s problems — fatigue, backaches, migraines — are not well treated with traditional modalities like narcotics,” says the Yale-educated Khalsa, who was raised in Cincinnati, attended Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, has been on staff at Cedars-Sinai for 30 years and is a clinical instructor at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine.

Morgan Freeman and Judith Light are among his longtime devotees. Says Light: “I had just started Who’s the Boss? and was exhausted. Dr. Khalsa is a brilliant diagnostician — he saw all of these things that have been lifelong problems. I attribute my energy and much of the longevity of my career to him.”

A 45-year-old producer with ulcerative colitis that was not responding to steroids and immunosuppressive drugs was put on a regimen of Chinese herbs and acupuncture. “Over the course of six months, we tapered from a very high steroid dose to none at all,” Khalsa tells THR. “Some months later, his gastroenterologist did a colonoscopy and was shocked to see that there were no lesions in his colon.” Pronounces Freeman: “Dr. Khalsa was referred to me by a close friend. I am very grateful for the referral.”

I was so honored to be chosen to be the “centerfold” of the paper edition as pictured above shortly after I received my own copy of the magazine!

The Detox Summit

I am happy to announce to all my patients and readers that starting next Monday, August 4, I invite you to attend the free Online International Detox Summit.

As I’ve written about many times in my blog, the toxicity of our environment is affecting our health in so many ways. This is especially relevant during pregnancy and early childhood.

I was especially honored to be asked to be one of the 30 participants in this seminar and my interview is on

Tuesday, August 5, 2014. I will be talking about the toxicity of our environment and how that is interacting with our genes. We call this the epigenetic influence. I will also discuss the importance of preparing for pregnancy.

In addition to me, there are 29 other interviews with prominent physicians, speakers, and authors. All aspects of detoxification including emotional detoxification, will be discussed over the eight days of this summit.

It is free to sign up and attend. Each day, a set of lectures will appear and you will have the whole day to listen to those lectures. If at the end of the week, there were lectures you missed, that you wanted to hear, you will be able to purchase them.

The stated goal of the conference is “To inform people about toxicity and inspire them to healthy solutions.”

Following the Detox Summit, they will help you put this information into action in September through a 21 day Detox Challenge. You will be provided with a day-by-day guidebook, online resources, and community groups. Before, during, and following this experience, you will have the opportunity to discuss your personal health goals and challenges leading into and out of the Detox Challenge.

You can sign up for the Detox Summit here:

When you sign up, you will receive daily emails during the summit that will give you access to over 30 of the world’s experts on what to do about toxins.

I look forward to being in dialogue with you on Facebook and Twitter, about this wonderful event. And of course for my patients I will be delighted to talk to about it in the office.

What I Am Doing This Week–Yoga and More!

I attended a 10 hour intensive Yoga Course this past weekend in LA- all day this past Saturday! I’ve been taking courses like this for the last 40 years, and have grown tremendously from this practice. I am so glad to see yoga getting popularized for all to benefit from.

This past week, Lift Brands, the parent Company to Snap Fitness, announced it was partnering with the largest yoga training program in the world to offer a 24/7-year-old franchise concept called YogaFit Studios.

Peter Taunton, the founder of Lift Brands and CEO stated “Our goal is to open 1000 domestic studios over the next five years‚Ķ We are confident yoga is here to stay and we are targeting aggressive expansion.”

It is now estimated that 20 million Americans practice yoga and spent nearly $6 billion annually in classes, yoga equipment and DVDs and more.

Mr Taunton is offering YogaFit franchises to yoga instructors who want to start their own center. You can learn more about this HERE.

Right on the heels of this exciting announcement is a new study that shows that yoga reduces fatigue and inflammation for breast cancer patients. This study was published in the very prestigious Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Those breast cancer patients who practiced yoga reported about 50% less fatigue than those in the control group and had 20% lower levels of three proteins in the blood that are markers for inflammation. These proteins that are generated by the immune system are known to cause fatigue, headaches and general malaise when we develop an infection.

It was also found that the more times a woman practiced yoga each week, the lower the levels of her tiredness and inflammation. In addition these benefits persisted for three months after the study ended. This is indeed exciting information.

In addition, excessive inflammation is also linked to a higher risk of breast cancer recurrence and most of the chronic diseases that we have in our world today. This includes diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease. All of these diseases will probably benefit from yoga !

You can read more about it here.

It is wonderfully exciting to me to see this most powerful tool for self centering and consciousness expansion -yoga-being offered on such a widescale to our entire country. Are you taking or teaching yoga classes yet?

A New Movie

Along with the consciousness expansion that yoga offers us, I am delighted to announce a new movie that was just released this past weekend called Fed Up.

This movie expands our consciousness in a different way than yoga does. It shows us what is going on in the food industry and how we’ve all been seduced into eating junk food. This movie is stated to “reveal a 30 year campaign by the food industry, aided by the US government, to mislead and confuse the American public, resulting in one of the largest health epidemics in history.

Katie Kouric stars in the film which is produced by Laurie David and directed by Stephaine Soechtig.

Check your local listings closely. In Los Angeles the movie is showing in only one theater on the west side of LA.

Here is the preview for your review.

In addition I strongly urge you watch this other video on Sugar: The Bitter Truth:

Please watch your children’s diets and educate them to eat healthy to avoid the epidemic of bad health that is expected to occur in our children and grandchildren.

What I am Doing!

Health Interactive LA

Pictured below from left to right are my colleagues Alan Greene, M.D., Myself and John La Puma, M.D.

This past Saturday – two days ago-,I was a speaker at the Los Angeles Health Interactive in Santa Monica California. I was on a panel with John La Puma, M.D., which was entitled “Your Health Questions Answered.” Dr. La Puma and I took questions from the audience, answering everything from “what to do for psoriasis”, to “how to get started meditating.”

I got to meet and hang out with Dr. Alan Greene, M.D., who is a very practical and naturally oriented pediatrician who is endeavoring to putting the care back into children’s health. You can’s visit his site here. He spoke on “Useful technology leading to a healthier America”.

Also, my good friend Ashley Koff, R.D.,pictured with me below, spoke on “Qualitarian Eating”.

The event was a lot of fun, and there were many interesting exhibitors with lots of new health products.

The organizers told me that my session will be available by video and I will let you know as soon as is posted.

Busy Weekend!

After speaking at the Health Interactive event, I immediately headed to Orange County to attend a seminar led by my longtime colleague Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D. The title of the seminar was Personalized Lifestyle Medicine: the Future of Health Care.”

Aside from Dr. Bland speaking, my colleagues Mark Hyman M.D. and Deanna Minich, Ph.D. spoke about the future of healthcare and the need for personalized lifestyle medicine.

I will give you a more detailed update in a future blog post.

What I Am Doing

This past weekend I attended my dear friend and patient Daniel Leighton’s exhibit of his new artwork showing the history of his journey with Crohn’s disease.

In the picture below you see David and me with one of his pieces of art depicting the surgery he had to remove his colon. You see the incision down his main abdomen, and behind it is his heart opening. He wears a mask as he does not want to be seen for who he is yet.

Daniel and Dr Soram Daniel and Dr Soram

Daniel gave a beautiful description of his journey from childhood until present. He thanked me in his speech for the help that I gave him using integrative medicine. You can see from this photo he looks very healthy and hardy now!

What may come as a surprise to you is that all his art at the exhibit was done on his iPad! In his talk to the audience he explained how the iPad was a perfect canvas to do his work because it gives him so many brushes and colors! This type of art will become the future, I’m quite sure.

Please visit his website to see more of his art, much of which depicts the journey he has taken to come physically emotionally and spiritually into more wholeness.

Gut, Brain, Autoimmune Symposium

Joel Kahn Soram-small

As promised, I want to review some of the highlights from the recent conference on the relation between our gut, our brain, our immune system and our food.

To the right, you will see me pictured with my colleague Joel Kahn, M.D. who was one of the speakers. Joel spoke on the relationship of gluten to celiac disease.I did not realize there was such a strong connection. Specifically, cardiomyopathy, which is an intrinsic disease of the muscle the heart, is one of the most common diseases associated with celiac disease.

Reference

There is an epidemic of Atrial Fibrillation now in our society amongst the baby-boomers. Recent studies have shown that celiac disease can be a cause of atrial fibrillation. In addition, studies have shown a relationship between celiac disease and the functioning of the inner lining of the blood vessels of the heart. Specifically, the study found endothelial dysfunction in celiac patients.

Atrial Fib Reference

Endothelium and Celiac

Finally, I am finding more and more patients with elevated homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid in the blood. It is analogous to cholesterol but not related to cholesterol or our diet. An elevation of the blood level of this amino acid, increases the risk for heart disease and cancer. This subsequent study found that in celiac disease, patients’ exclusion of gluten would normalize their homocysteine level. This would make it so that it is not necessary to use medications to help people with celiac disease, who have a high [homocysteine]

Reference

Again, the studies I am mentioning to you have shown the relationship of celiac disease and heart disease. I raise the question of what happens to patients who have “incomplete celiac” disease. I.e. Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity?

I talk to my patients all the time about how health is on a spectrum. Even though celiac disease is way over in the disease column, what about the effects on the heart of gluten sensitivity that is not at this time documented to be celiac disease?

If you have friends or relatives with cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation, or elevated homocysteine, suggest to them that their doctor should check them for celiac disease. Hopefully, research will show us whether having Non-celiac gluten sensitivity has any relation to these cardiovascular conditions as well.

Back From The Conference!

At the time of writing this post, I am just back from the big medical symposium on Gut, Brain, and Autoimmune Disorders: The Role of Food.

The conference was fantastic, and I learned so much!

The brilliant Alessio Fasano,M.D., gave an update on his research on the role of gluten in many health problems. He is the doctor that helped put non-celiac gluten sensitivity on the map, so that it is now recognized by traditional gastroenterologists.
Just like with our general health and well-being, he has helped us recognize that there is a spectrum of gluten sensitivity, as I have written about in my previous newsletters.

In addition, William Davis, M.D., the author of Wheat Belly gave about three hours of lecture that were very informative.

Some of my favorite lectures were from my friend David Perlmutter, M.D. who is an integrative neurologist in Florida. He spoke about the coming epidemic of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and gave a lot of ideas on what we can do to protect our brain.

It was my intention to give you a summary of the conference in this week’s newsletter. However, there was so much information that it will take me some time to organize it.

Because I went out of town for a brief vacation this past weekend, I did not have time to get the organization of this information started. In next week’s issue, the Labor Day issue, I will begin to review some of the information I learned.

Until then, there are some good articles by my writers this week!

What is Dr Soram Doing?

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMugAs I am writing this post, I am preparing to attend a very exciting convention here in Los Angeles! The title of the convention is “Gut, Brain, and Autoimmune Disorders: The Role Of Food.”

This course will provide me with the latest information regarding the links between food and many diseases. The emphasis of the weekend will be on gastrointestinal and neurological disorders but will also cover other organ systems including the cardiovascular system. In addition endocrine dysfunction, skin issues and joint disorders will also be discussed.

I am most excited that  William Davis, M.D., the author of Wheat Belly will be speaking for four hours about his newest findings in regard to wheat and health.

In addition, the world-famous Alessio Fasano,M.D., who is a world renowned pediatric gastroenterologist and research scientist, as well as the chief at the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the world-famous Mass General Hospital for Children, will be speaking. Dr. Fassano is doing International Research and will lead us to a greater understanding of the complicated nature of gluten – related disorders, including celiac disease, gluten sensitivity and wheat allergy. Dr. Fasano will also be addressing us for almost 4 hours.

I really look forward to bringing the information I get at this convention to all my readers and patients in my future posts.

Do You Know About Uber?

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

Even though my newsletter is mostly about health and wellness, from time to time I find things which I want to share with my patients which I think are very helpful. One of my young patients introduced me to this!

If you don’t already know about it, there is a great service in Los Angeles and many other major cities called Uber. Uber is a car service that directly integrates with your smart phone. There are apps for both iPhone and android phones now. Uber has cars all over the city and you order one right from your cell phone. The car usually picks you up within 5 to 6 minutes. Prices are significantly cheaper than a taxicab.

You can pick one of three levels of car:

1. A black limo type car.

2. A Prius type of car which is less expensive.

3. An SUV.

You register yourself with your credit card and they do not require tips. The driver will pick you up, take you to your destination, and you get out of the car! It’s all done automatically through your smart phone and your credit card.

You can find out more about it HERE. If you use that link, they will apply a $10 credit to your new account!  Who knows? You might want to take an Uber car to your next office visit.
