I must say I'm not familiar with those massive doses of vitamin D injections. We do not have the injectable vitamin D in the United States.

In my many years of normalizing my patient's vitamin D levels, have not found one patient whose level I could not get up with oral vitamin D. Perhaps the particular preparation your doctor is using is not labeled correctly?

Your level of less than 10 ng per milliliter is is certainly extremely low — it is at rickets level.

I would ask your doctor to talk with you about giving you 50,000 units of vitamin D as a capsule one time per week for eight weeks and then re-measuring your levels. Ideally these capsules would be vitamin D3 but vitamin D2 would be acceptable. I would be interested in knowing what your blood levels were after eight weeks of this oral dose and would be delighted if you would e-mail me back or reply here on the forum as to what the results of this treatment protocol would be for you.

With best wishes,

Dr. Soram

I was finally diagnosed in February 2009 by a consultant endocrinologist, with a statement of "no discernable level of Vitamin D on blood test". I enquired on normal level (50), my level (less than 10 which is the lowest reading) and treatment (Ergocalciferol 300,000u weekly, to be taken orally - although presented as an injectable vial). Blood tests every 8 weeks have shown little improvement with only one reading at 11 and all the others at <10. I live in England and am back with my local doctor, who has suggested one injection of 300,000u Ergocalciferol and calcium levels checks after one and two weeks, and a Vitamin D blood test after four months.

I have been seeking treatment for 10 years at least although this test did was not made earlier. As you might realise, I have constant pain and I need some other input as I consider this approach will be delaying alternative treatments for four months at least. My doctor's information suggests that one injection of 300,000u would be enough to raise my levels.

Please comment.
