Hello, Dr. Soram. I am in the Vitamin D study, and in Oct 09 my vit D level was 44 ng/ml. I was taking less than 2000 IU of Vit D-3 prior to that test, and didn't spend a lot of time outside during the summer (i.e. I wasn't lying in the sun or spending hours at a time out there - just doing normal activities with my kids).
I took 5000 IU per day between October and April, but my vit D level decreased to 34. I recently had blood tests done which showed that my thyroid and everything else they tested is good.
I live in Northern Michigan, so I know that I am not going to get a lot of help from the sun. I am planning on increasing my supplements to 50,000/week, but I am wondering if you have any other recommendations. What other things could be bringing my levels down despite taking 35,000 IU/week? In an interview you mentioned that once a person is at 40-50 ng/ml you would recommend they stay at 2000 IU/day indefinitely. Based on these test results could it be that once I get to 50 I will need to take a higher dose every day for maintenance?
Thank you for your help.
